Judebrod (you-de-brod "o" with an umlaut) -- Swedish Christmas cookies Judy Anderson 1 cup butter 1 cup sugar 3.5 cup flour 2 oz. whipping cream or milk 2 eggs 2 tsp. baking powder 2 tsp. cinnamon 2 tsp. cardamom 1 tsp. nutmeg 1 tsp. cloves 1 tsp. allspice Cream butter, add sugar, eggs, and beat well. Sift or stir together other dry ingredients. Gradually add to wet mixture alternating with cream until thoroughly mixed. Chill dough in fridge for about an hour. Roll out and use cookie cutters. Optionally sprinkle cookies with cinnamon sugar, and bake at 400 degrees for 8-10 minutes. I use insulated cookie sheets, and bake only one sheet at a time, on the middle rack. I got this recipe from my mother, who I believe got it from her mother, who was a Swede! So it's even authentic. (Well, I think the whipping cream was instead skimmed off the top of the milk, but you can't have everything with modern times. And then I substitute milk anyway because we don't usually have cream on hand.) Fun fact: The copy my mom had said "one shot glass cream". We had to guess about the 2 oz. conversion, but it seems to work out OK. Recipe makes quite a number of cookies (of course, depends on your cookie cutter size!) so I frequently only make 1/2 recipe if I am not bringing them to a party.
