Original recipe from the children's book "My Grandma is Great" by Hannah Roche 1/2 C butter or vegetable oil 1/2 C sugar 1/2 C molasses 1/4 C water 1.5 C whole wheat pastry flour 1.5 C white flour 1/2 tsp baking soda 1/4 tsp salt (if using vegetable oil, omit if using butter) 1 tsp ground ginger 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg 1/8 tsp ground allspice Mix molasses and water, stir until molasses is thinned. Cream butter with sugar (or mix sugar into oil). Stir together flours and spices. Alternate between flour and thinned molasses, adding to butter(oil)/sugar mixture. Chill. If using oil, chill thoroughly. If using butter, it will be a bit stiff at fridge temperatures. Roll out to 1/8 inch (ish? Not as thick as 1/4 inch). Cut with cookie cutters. Bake at 375 for 8-10 minutes, one tray at a time.
